Author FH jr Guess on WFAA’ s “Daybreak” Morning Show Promoting his Book, SOC, Welcome to The Cage”
The story of “SOC, Welcome to The Cage” is about my experience as counselor of South Oak Cliff High School. I chose to work at South Oak Cliff High School because while working as a counselor for the Ft. Worth School District I read an article in an education magazine about the lack of African American males working in inter-city schools. While I expected challenges at South Oak Cliff High School, but nothing could compare me for what I found when I discovered the man who hired me turned out to be nothing like the person who recruited me with a vision of hope and change for the school.
The story of “SOC, Welcome to The Cage” depicts my rise and fall, and rise again as I found myself in a confrontation with the entire Dallas Independent School District when some of the district’s darkest secrets were discovered, such as my principal Donald Moten being exposed as a serial sexual harasser, teachers who barley came to work, student bullying other students, school wide cheating on standard test, grade changing for athletes along with the principal charging students to attend school sanctioned pep rallies, and keeping the money for gambling outings. The darkest secret of all was the fact that the principal of South Oak Cliff High School, along with school security guards forced the students who got into trouble at school to participate in sanctioned cage fights.
I quickly found myself placed on administrative leave along with some twenty other district employees housed at the Human Resources building forced to sit in the lobby for months doing nothing until we either quit, or were terminated from the school district without due process.
Discovered by an investigative reporter from Dallas news station WFAA who questioned why the Dallas Independent School District was denying its employees due process lead to the discovery of the many scandals including cage fighting and a grade changing scandal which put the 2008 NCAA Men’s College Basketball championship in jeopardy.
In an effort to protect its high school championships the Dallas Independent School District, along with the community chose to look the other way with regards to actions of the controversial principal of South Oak Cliff High School, and retaliated against me for being a whistle-blower.
“SOC, Welcome to The Cage is the story of my four years as counselor of South Oak Cliff High School, and the many conflicts counselors find ourselves in on a daily basis when torn between following the laws and duties of counseling, and going along with the self imposed immoral, and illegal acts of the status quo establishment by those in charge of educating our school children.
All proceeds of the “SOC, Welcome to The Cage”, along with donations go to support The Watchful-eye show which in turns ables us to provide assistance to those who seek help with regards to Administrative Bullying.
