Calls have mounted for recently promoted Dallas ISD administrator Shirley Ison-Newsome to be fired after being investigated in a new spending controversy. Ison-Newsome authorized a $1,500 bowling trip in Arlington in August for a team building event for Wilmer-Hutchins elementary staff.
The district investigated the event and found that Ison-Newsome violated two DISD policies, including a directive sent weeks before the trip that ordered a stop to such out-of-town trips. Ison-Newsome said the trip had been planned months before DISD sent out the directive, which Ison-Newsome also said she didn’t see. The investigation was first reported by WFAA (Channel 8).
Several DISD watchdogs are now calling for Ison-Newsome to be fired or resign.
“It’s time for her to go home,” said Mary Ann Climer, a district watchdog and vice-chair of Dallas Friends of Public Education.
